Some of these projects are tangentially related to the military half of the equation - as an example, an increased ability to store food will help a town or castle under siege hold out longer as it would have more supplies than usual. These include things like the ability to generate and store more food or increase the overall amount of villagers spawned in a town. The civic projects are focused on the more mundane, everyday parts of village life. Military projects will add another layer to your long-term defenses for your holdings. While most fiefs will (hopefully) be well behind friendly lines, experienced Mount & Blade players are well familiar with the idea of certain border castles and towns having a need to be heavily defended and outfitted with a healthy garrison in order to fend off repeated attacks. These will be upgrades to the fief like walls, towers, and the like that will improve its effectiveness in a combat situation.

Military projects are a relatively straightforward affair. If you want to speed things up, you can hire some outside help for an additional cost. New to Bannerlord is the idea of "manpower" - a resource that is measured by how many people you have living in your village. Just like the first game, these projects will cost you a measure of money to get going and will take a certain amount of time.
